Compulsory education and absenteeism

Children are required by law to attend school from the age of 5, until they achieve a diploma (basic qualification) or reach the age of 18. For schoolchildren up to the age of 16, this is known as compulsory education. For those aged between 16 and 18, this is known as qualification requirement. Is your child unable to attend school? Always inform the school in this case. If a pupil is often absent, or plays truant, the school will report this to the school attendance officer.

Schools and institutions are legally required to report any relative absenteeism (truancy) and absolute absenteeism (not enrolled in a school or disenrolled without a basic qualification) of pupils to the school attendance officer.

The Compulsory Education Plus team at Eindhoven Municipality is tasked with enforcing the compulsory education and qualification requirements. Do you have a question for the Compulsory Education Plus team? Please get in touch by phone on 040 238 27 26 or send an email to
