What is a DigiD?
DigiD is your digital identity. A DigiD consists of a username and password which you choose.
You can use your DigiD to prove your identity online. By logging in using your DigiD, you prove that you are who you say you are. This subsequently gives you access to countless Dutch government organisations' websites, such as those of municipalities and health insurers.
How do I apply for a DigiD?
You can apply for your personal DigiD at www.digid.nl.
Important: don't forget to activate your DigiD after the application. Read how to do this at www.digid.nl.
Which matters can I organise using my DigiD?
You can sort out matters with a number of Dutch government organisations using your DigiD. For example:
- fill in your tax return;
- apply for Child Benefit allowance;
- request an extract from a government register;
- matters concerning your health insurance.
Am I obliged to have a DigiD?
No, a DigiD is not obligatory.
However, we recommend you apply for a DigiD. More and more government organisations require you to have a DigiD in order to gain access to electronic services.
