What is the difference between marriage and a registered partnership?
In the Netherlands, a registered partnership is almost equal to marriage. The rights and responsibilities between married couples and registered partners are the same, as are the conditions and requirements you have to meet and the documents you have to provide. We will therefore refer to it as marriage/registered partnership from now on. Indicate your choice at step 3, the announcement.
There are only 2 differences:
- A registered partnership is not always recognised in other countries. That can cause problems with work or accommodation in those countries.
- To dissolve a marriage you must go to court. A registered partnership can be dissolved through a lawyer or notary public, as long as there are no under-age children involved.
In addition to marriage and a registered partnership, you can also choose to draw up a cohabitation agreement. Are you still undecided as to which would be best for you? Read more about the choices at rijksoverheid.nl.
Can we convert a registered partnership to a marriage?
Since a registered partnership is more or less the same as a marriage, registered partners may not marry each other. You may, however, convert the partnership to a marriage. This can be done in any Dutch municipality. No witnesses are necessary.
In Eindhoven, the conversion can be done in 1 of 2 ways:
- At the appropriate counter at Residents' Plaza. This costs 75 Euros. Phone 14 040 to make an appointment.
- In the wedding room at the Town Hall, with a ceremony. The cost is the same as for a wedding.
We wish you every happiness and a wonderful day. Would you prefer to discuss the announcement, and the choice of date, time and location in person? You are welcome, without an appointment, on weekdays between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. in Residents' Plaza (in the Stadskantoor). You can also always get in touch with us with any other questions you may have about marrying or entering a registered partnership in Eindhoven.
