Exchanging foreign driving licence for Dutch driving licence

Step by step

  1. Make an appointment.
  2. Come to Residents' Plaza (Inwonersplein) and bring the necessary documents with you.
  3. We will inform you as soon as your Dutch driving licence is ready for you to collect.

If you have a driving licence from one of the member states of The European Union (EU), or from Lichtenstein, Norway, Iceland or Switzerland (EFTA) you may use that licence in the Netherlands for a maximum of 15  years (calculated from the time of the application abroad). After that, you must exchange it for a Dutch driving licence. This is on condition that the driving licence is valid.

There is a maximum period of 5 years for the categories C1, C, D1, D, C1E, CE, D1E and DE. Has the period mentioned expired, or is it shorter than 2 years, at the time of applying in the Netherlands? If so, you may continue to drive with the foreign licence for another 2 years, from the date of your registration in the Netherlands.

Do you have a driving licence issued in another country? You may use it for a maximum of 185 days from the date you took up residence in the Netherlands. At the end of that period, you are required to take a Dutch driving test.

You will find more information at rdw.nl (Dutch Department of Road Transport).
